Picnic and hunting areas

Borkovac picnic area

The Borkovac picnic area is located just 2 kilometers from the center of Ruma towards Fruška Gora true oasis of greenery. An ideal place for picnickers, athletes, and recreationists. There are well-maintained trim tracks and walkways that stretch through the tree line.

In the 60s of the last century, there was also an outdoor swimming pool here, which has not been in operation for a long time. Now it has been replaced by a new outdoor Olympic swimming pool with accompanying facilities, which is ready to receive interested citizens of Ruma, as well as guests from the surrounding towns.

The new pool meets all the requirements for swimming competitions and water polo matches of the highest rank. The building is of an open type, so it works in the summer season starting from mid-June to mid-September.

The complex, in addition to a large Olympic pool and a small children’s pool, also has additional facilities such as a game room with table tennis tables, dart machines, foosball tables, and Sony Play Station consoles.

Also, two catering facilities are at the service of bathers – cafes where, with pleasant music, visitors can refresh and relax and eat some fast food.
In addition to the daytime program, the management has provided additional entertainment content at night in the form of night swimming and night entertainment programs, such as parties, concerts, water games, and the like.

For those who want to do sports, as well as for the youngest, the pool has provided a swimming school and, since the 2017 season, water polo training and diving lessons.

On Trskovača Pond there are populations of rare, indigenous fish species, rich ornithofauna, characteristic flora maintained in mosaic forms, and a complex habitat that needs to be revitalized, improved, and protected.

Trskovača Pond

Trskovača Pond is located on the periphery of the village of Platičeva in the southern part of the municipality of Ruma, and it has been placed under the protection of the state to preserve the natural spawning grounds of rare autochthonous species of fish: tench and golden crucian carp, as well as the habitats of characteristic marsh-marsh ecosystems and marsh vegetation on the shores such as reeds, sedges, bulrush, and marsh willows.

Trskovača is a former marsh ecosystem that was significantly changed in the seventies of the 20th century when hydro-ameliorative measures were taken to bring this area to agricultural purposes and intensive cultivation, which was a trend in the world at that time.

As it is a depression and one of the flood zones of the Sava River and is characterized by a high level of groundwater, the high air humidity in the summer months, and dew created by this microclimate, Trskovača was at that time a very important area both for farmers, especially vegetable growers and as a habitat for rare, autochthonous species of flora and fauna.

By undertaking the mentioned actions, the pond ecosystem was drastically changed and damaged, and the former water mirrors were reduced to artificial channels. On land surfaces, cultivation was represented only on plots that could be cultivated (due to high groundwater and low soil quality).

As a consequence of this situation, many plots were abandoned shortly after intensive agricultural cultivation and there was a change of vegetation.

At the beginning of the 21st century, on the initiative of the inhabitants of Platičevo, which is one of the few examples in Serbia, research was initiated by scientific and professional institutions that covered the pedological, morphological, cultural, and natural features of this area.

The results of the research were presented in the Protection Study, which was the starting point for declaring the protection of this habitat.

The data showed stable populations of rare, indigenous fish species, rich ornithofauna, characteristic flora maintained in mosaic forms, and a complex habitat that needs to be revitalized, improved, and protected. Thus, since 2011, active protection measures have been undertaken through a series of activities and in compliance with the conditions of nature protection.

Posavina hunting ground Karakusha

In the southern part of Ruma, there is a forest complex and hunting ground “Karakuša”. It was founded in 1977 and has a very favorable geographical position. It is located next to the main road Novi Sad-Ruma-Šabac and near major centers of domestic tourism, and the position of the farm is very suitable for the arrival of guests from abroad, as it is 21 kilometers from the Belgrade-Zagreb highway and 65 kilometers from Nikola Tesla Airport.

There is also a hunting lodge on the hunting grounds, which provides accommodation for hunters if they come here for a multi-day hunt. The largest hydrographic object is the Sava River, which limits the hunting grounds on the western and southern sides.

The surface water also consists of numerous ponds, ponds, and canals, which together with the Sava serve as watering places for wild boars and deer. In terms of the number of animal species, Karakuša is one of the richest habitats in Vojvodina.

Dominant plant communities in the area of the hunting grounds are oak forests in depressions, forests of hornbeam and hornbeam with ash, white poplar forests, and natural meadows are covered with various grasses. The mentioned plant species are very suitable for game life and were, in addition to other geographical elements, an important condition for the formation of hunting grounds.
